Differences between genuine leather and faux (eco) leather

Genuine leather and synthetic “eco” leather are popular materials used in clothing, footwear and accessories. What are the actual differences — and what should you consider when choosing?

Genuine leather — what you need to know

Genuine leather is a natural material from animal hides, carefully processed in tanneries. It’s valued for its durability, distinctive grain and the way it ages — developing a unique patina over time.

Pros of genuine leather:

Durability — premium leather is resistant to wear and can last for many years.

Breathability — leather “breathes”, making garments comfortable for everyday wear.

Comfort — the material adapts to the body and becomes more supple over time.

Cons of genuine leather:

Care — requires regular maintenance and protection from excess moisture.

Price — higher than synthetic alternatives due to material and craftsmanship.

Eco (faux) leather — what is it?

“Eco leather” usually refers to synthetic materials (like PU or PVC) that imitate the look of leather. They don’t have the same properties as natural leather, but are often chosen for price and easy care.

Pros of faux leather:

Price — usually lower than genuine leather.

Care — easy to clean; doesn’t require conditioning like natural leather.

Cons of faux leather:

Lower durability — may crack or peel with time, especially in stress areas.

Breathability — limited compared to natural leather; can feel less comfortable over long wear.

How to tell genuine leather from faux leather?

Texture and grain are clues: genuine leather has an irregular, natural grain and may show small variations. Faux leather often has a repetitive pattern or a perfectly smooth, almost plastic surface.

Genuine leather is also usually thicker and stiffer than faux leather — and has a characteristic, natural scent that differs from the rubbery smell of synthetics.

Genuine leather is a refined material that makes products look and feel premium. With proper care, a leather jacket keeps its shape and style — garments remain in great condition for many years.
